The River Fowey adventure...
...September 1st and the sun was shining and a new adventure was called for. There’s so much of the Cornish coast and estuaries that we haven’t walked so it was time for another tick on the map. This adventure started off from Lerryn car park, plenty of spaces to choose from early in the morning as the tourists were still sleeping.
From the car park we headed out onto the main road and back over the bridge, it was a high spring tide and the stepping stones weren’t visible. Over the bridge we hung a left and followed our noses until we found the river again and the track that ran alongside it. The tide was high, the only sounds were the birds chirping away and the noises of river from the few people rowing/skulling up and down it.
We followed the river down stream heading towards Fowey & Golant. The trail winds it way through Ethy woods & along the river bank and after a few miles brings you out downstream of St Winnow and it’s church, luckily the tide was on its way out and we were able to walk/play along the mudflats until we reached the pontoon and made it back onto dry land. That was the flat and easy part done, we stopped and listened to the church bells ringing for a few minutes before finding the signs for the public footpath and the uphill climb ahead of us.
We climbed up the hill and was greeted by some fantastic views back down the valley and across the river. We continued to follow the yellow arrows of the footpath signs, combined with a bit of common sense and our natural inbuilt compasses and eventually made our way back across the fields to Ethy Wood and the river side trail. Sprocket found himself a lovely natural filled trough to have a drink/cool down in, I’m sure it’s coincidence but it’s perfectly placed right at the end of the walk. From here it was over the bridge and back to the car park where it was time to dry off and chill out with a cold bowl of water and some biscuits for sprocket and a rhubarb and cream ice cream for me.
